A Paper on the Relationship Between Cardiovascular Biomarkers, Plasma Albumin, and Extreme Longevity Has Been Published in Nature Communications

Our center conducted a multi-generational cohort study of 1,427 older adults, including 36 supercentenarians (aged 110 and above), and found that NT-proBNP, a biomarker of heart failure, is associated with the prognosis of long-lived individuals.

We found that NT-proBNP is particularly strongly associated with life expectancy beyond age 105, with lower blood concentrations of this molecule linked to a greater likelihood of reaching age 110 and beyond. We also found that lower albumin levels—which reflect nutritional status and are an important prognostic factor in older adults—were associated with higher all-cause mortality across all age groups.

This research reveals some of the biological characteristics of extremely long-lived individuals approaching the limits of human lifespan, and is expected to contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular disease—a growing concern with aging—and the development of new treatments.

This research was published online on July 30 in the British scientific journal Nature Communications.
